Thanks for focusing on Earth Day and connecting it to elections. I participated in the very first one in 1970. This is said to be the largest protest in American history, with all due respect to No Kings Protests which I also have participated in. The only caveat is that many during the first Earth Day attended things like teach-ins and were still counted, along with the street protestors. Compared to protecting our life-support system, all else pales in comparison. Doing so used to be bipartisan but not any longer. Now, we have to get the Republicans out and elect Dems to have any chance at improving environmental issues. What kind of world shall we leave for those to come, including all life forms?? It is up to us.

To me, the news media is focused too much on political events and not climate change. The media should run news bites on climate change and events on a regular basis to educate the public on the need for taking care of our environment. We share the air and resources with, what, 8 billion people that breath the air we pollute and the resources we squander. Once the public understands the need for climate change we will see legislation to preserve and regulate the needs of our planet for future generations.

If I had the billions that are thrown at the Republican PACs, I'd build solar- (or wave- or tide- or wind-) powered de-salinators. I'd put solar panels on every factory, hospital, MetroRail Station, etc. I'd push FPL to close all coal, oil or nuclear driven power plants, and to replace them with FPL supported home solar panels. I'd support researching, developing and erecting air cleaners to get rid of air pollution. I'd encourage airplane and helicopter manufactures to develop electric motors. And so on.

Is there any way that oil can be used that doesn't pollute the envoronment?

I admire, apppreciate, and support your efforts, J.C., but I'm afraid Spaceship Earth is going to have to survive without the support of what used to be its greatest nation.

I planted a tree in your honor in Israel. Your day to water it is Mondays.

It seems like the nitwit in charge of this country is not content to just take down democracy but he wants to uplift oil and gas to the detriment of the environment. We have the technology right now to replace oil and gas but the oil and gas lobbyists and money seem to be a bottomless pit. If we somehow had the collective will and wherewithal to all drive electric cars that would go a long way. We must produce our electricity without using oil or gas and it can be done but the moneyed class supports oil and gas and they have no interest in doing anything but making money.

Traditionally, it takes six nails to close a coffin lid. How many have we banged into the lid on our environment's coffin so far? Who is wielding the hammer? How many nails are still in his mouth?

You wrote "deforestation is dropping", but did you mean to say that *** the rate of *** deforestation is dropping?

We can add all the solar, wind, and geothermal energy we want. We can compost, and recycle and install low-flow faucets. But all that pales in comparison to the impact animal farming has on the environment. Many sources cite that it is responsible for over 50% of all greenhouse gases. And deforestation? That's mostly done to support animal farming.

Don't wait for the government to do anything necessary. It's up to you.
