Local governments are already struggling to pay for schools and other public services. Their alternative would be to raise sales taxes and various fees—the most regressive forms of taxation. People who don’t understand how this works may vote to eliminate property taxes only to find they are much worse off than before.

I think that's what he is counting on. "I lead the way to eliminate Property Taxes and it was approved by (add some outrageous % here). Vote for my wife for Governor and have 4 more years of DeSantis leadership.'

They should work on home owners insurance which is sky high and leave property taxes alone.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul at the cost of those in need of assistance. DeathSantis strikes again.

If DeSantis wants to help me with a home cost, why doesn't he help with Home Owner's Insurance??? Mine as gone up - almost doubled in the last 5 years! My insurance is over $6000 a year. That would be something he could do that would not screw up our State. Maybe he couldn't do it without screwing up the State...

It appears that Mr. D is working hard to join The Deranged Elected Public Servants (or DEPS) elite group. If he is able to eliminate property taxes he will need to find a substitute — may I suggest the first born?

I think we should support the Republicans on reducing property taxes. There is money for public schools if we weren't giving out vouchers for private schools. If the Dem's want votes, we need to start reducing the cost of living and a big chunk is property taxes. Mine have doubled as the home values have increased.

You must not have the save our homes tax. I've lived in my home for 22 yrs and last year taxes were $2,500. Our 5 acre 1700 sq. ft. 2 Key West style home is worth a million. My taxes would be lower but I rented my house out to my ex years ago and she turned me in for claiming Homestead exemption fraud and the base for Save Our Homes was raised. People move here from up North (we don't need more people) because of the taxes up North and then they complain about property taxes here. Floriduh is one of the lowest cost price for taxes in the country. People who moved here in the last few years have driven up the housing costs in this state. They should pay more in taxes so they can pay for the additional infrastructure costs they create. They sure have degraded the quality of life for those that were already here.

In the free state of Florida there is no income taxes but there endlessly fees for everything else. Most roads have tolls every few miles, and endless sales taxes.when you get your real estate taxes there are a litany of other things tacked on for example the school tax, fire tax, St John river tax, the Indian River lagoon tax etc. etc.

My homeowners insurance is more than my property taxes. I do have Save Our Homes. I built my house in 2002.

Don't be fooled! This is just a money grab by the state to control funds normally controlled by local governments. It is surprising to me that the Free state of Florida is attempting to govern local authority by such tactics. Tell those legislators and the governor to keep their hands out of our pockets. In the long run this will cost Florida a lot more problems that the state can refuse to solve.

You are correct, the repubs want more people to move here because they are mostly repubs. Also they want to protect the developers who buy large chunks of land for future development.

A property tax reduction would help the lower and middle class home owners a lot more than the rich home owner. It doesn't help a rich person that much to get a $250,000. reduction in value on a 2 million dollar home, but it helps the person with a $300,000. home alot.

There is a lot to be said for the slogan, "Tax the rich," accompanied by another slogan, "Eat the rich." It is not that it is shameful to be rich, but the way most of these people got rich is shameful. One of the most egregious ways to exorbitant prosperity is to manipulate the tax system to reduce the taxes paid by selective earners. By working hard to gain political power, already rich men and women were able to lower taxes to benefit themselves. And now, they are simply going after one of the few remaining tax vehicles. Property taxes are a direct threat to the owning class so of course they want to get rid of them.

This is just one more thinly disguised tax break that mostly benefits the wealthy. In general the richer you are the more likely you are to live in a expensive home. The more expensive the home, the higher the property tax on that home. This does nothing for the poor who can't afford a home in the first place.

And increasing the sales tax is regressive.
