Draw a Picture of a Bird Day
It's a touching story about a little girl and her efforts to cheer wounded veterans in World War II
You see the headline “Draw a Picture of a Bird Day” and if you’re like me your eyes start to glaze over.
That was my first reaction when I was researching events for my Florida Weekly column, and I nearly glossed over it in favor of numerous other events and anniversaries for April 8. But I’m glad I lingered and continued reading.
The story behind this day is both uplifting and tragic. It’s about a little girl named Dorie who visited her wounded uncle during World War II, and how she ended up cheering an entire hospital ward, injured veterans, doctors, nurses, and all.
And then tragedy struck.
