There is a Haredi man who can no longer stand for the Shema because he was unvaccinated for polio. An El Al flight attendant contracted measles and died before she received a planned second vaccine dose. Often finding myself in an airplane cabin with vaccine-deniers, I took it upon myself to get booster doses of the polio and trivalent (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccines. (I believe the polio vaccine is trivalent as well because polio comes in 3 flavors.)

Let me point out that gravity is a verifiable force, the Moon is "a place" (not just a splotch on the sky), and the Earth is not the center of the universe. These ideas are well-accepted because they are verifiable, part of the objective reality underpinning empirical philosophy, the "Ph" in PhD. You immediately recognize the name of the scientist who championed these ideas, and the airport in his hometown of Pisa is named for him. But, without looking it up, try to name the pope who was antagonized by these ideas, who referred the scientist to the Inquisition, which convicted him of heresy. I dare say (as I teach my doctoral students), you have no argument with Galileo but cannot name the political figure who persecuted him. Take heart: The unpleasant and uninformed political forces are temporary; science is permanent, because it is the method for the discovery of objective reality.
Thanks for this important comprehensive report on the worldwide vax/anti-vax issues. I will refrain from telling my own personal story on this subject, recalling instead the days of the COVID pandemic of the stories of people on their death bed in a hospital crying out to get the COVID vaccine. But it was too late. It is sad that people do not understand how herd immunity factors into public health and that they will succumb to ignoring public health in favor of RFK, Jr's conspiracy theories or how we even got someone without a minute of medical training to be Secretary of HHS.
Such a sad and frightening commentary on vaccines since this crazy administration took power. The speed at which this administration has ruined America is incredible and terrifying. The administration has appointed incompetent individuals to high-ranking positions, such as Kennedy and Dr. Oz. There are many people in America who believe what the Trump administration tells them. They lack independent thought. If you intend to send your child to public school, then they must be vaccinated. Vaccines save lives. Yes, there can be problems, but because a small percentage of children had side effects, all children should still be vaccinated. Science by qualified scientists must be used to make decisions, and that isn't happening now.
