We’ve been wondering if there would be an October Surprise, an unexpected last-minute twist or turn that could change the trajectory of the November election.
Could this be it? Donald Trump’s checks to voters that are now arriving in people’s mailboxes?
It’s a strategy that’s been playing out in broad daylight, but now that his letters are arriving, you have to wonder what impact this will have on the election, especially the turnout of Republican voters who might otherwise have stayed home.
First, Trump exhorted Republicans to show up on election day and pretend he’s on the ballot. He did this even though G.O.P. candidates were distancing themselves from his declining popularity.
But now, Step Two: The Treasury Department is distributing checks to millions of Americans, along with a letter from you-know-who, so there’s no mistaking their benefactor: None other than the very same president they are supposed to imagine is on that Nov. 3 ballot.
There are two categories of largesse:
About 950,000 people will get $500 (or larger) checks in 30 states as part of a so-called rebate from the Affordable Care Act program. Money that Joe Biden cheated them out of, Trump says.
(The states receiving the most checks are also the states that engaged in the most extreme gerrymandering to favor G.O.P. congressional candidates—Texas and Florida.)
Another 21 million Americans will get $90 checks to offset health medical costs, because Trump cares so deeply about everyone’s health. After all, why else would he have put Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Doctor Oz in charge?
And, of course, Trump’s the hero, patting all these voters in their wallets. Just as mail-in voting has begun in many states.
You have to read his letter to understand how outrageous Trump’s glory-hounding is.
Here it goes:
For years, the Biden Administration overcharged you to fund the operation of HealthCare.gov. That money belongs to hard-working Americans, not the Government, and now, I am returning it to you!
With this Historic Action, my Administration is taking the surplus funds that accumulated from the Obamacare “Premium Tax” and issuing a one-time $500 REFUND to Americans who use the HealthCare.gov platform to purchase their health insurance, but who do not receive Taxpayer Subsidies to help pay for their Coverage. You have paid into this flawed System, and now you are finally getting something back.
Healthcare Dollars should benefit Patients, not Insurance Companies or Government Bureaucrats. Since returning to office, I have fought to lower Healthcare Costs, increase Accountability, and Put Patients First. Through TrumpRx, we are delivering massive discounts on Household Prescription Drugs, and my Most-Favored-Nation Pricing Agreements have already saved Americans more than 1 Billion Dollars on much-needed Medications. We also secured an unprecedented 50 Billion Dollar investment to transform Rural Healthcare, expanded access to Health Saving Accounts for millions of people on Obamacare, and restored Price Transparency, all while rooting out the Waste, Fraud, and Abuse across our Healthcare System.
I am proud to return your money to you, and I will never stop fighting to put the American People FIRST, restore Affordability, protect your hard-earned money, and lower the Cost of Healthcare.
May God bless you, and may He continue to bless the United States of America!
Sincerely,
DONALD J. TRUMP
We all saw last week how Trump used taxpayers' dollars to strut before the cameras in a series of TV ads during football programming, a blatantly illegal misuse of taxpayers' funds under the pretext that those “Love Me” political infomercials were public service announcements.
Now this. It’s nothing short of a campaign letter, mailed at taxpayers’ expense, with a bonus check to boot.
None dare call it bribery.
Well, that’s not true. I imagine every Democratic candidate in the country will be calling it that. They should.
You will be shocked, I’m sure, that Trump said nothing about his Big Bloated Budget Bill that he and his Republican allies in Congress rammed through earlier this year for his billionaire friends while failing to extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies that had been keeping health insurance costs down for millions of ordinary Americans.
Nope, he didn’t mention any of that. It’s all Biden’s fault.
But, pray tell, how could it be Biden’s fault since health insurance premiums on Trump’s watch are now 58 percent higher than under his predecessor?
Oops. Fake News!
Can’t let little details like that get in the way of bragging rights.
And let’s not forget, he’s also promised a $5000 check to every voter if only we return Republicans to Congress to keep Democrats from launching investigations into his corruption.
Even corruption like this. Right out in the open for everyone to see. He’s gambling (with taxpayers’ money) that voters can be bought off.
It’s what conmen do.
I guess we’ll see whether his cynicism is justified.
It’s a choice that we’ll all make on Nov. 3.
