A free press is vital to democracy. As ours is being fettered, the deliberate dismantling of our democracy by the Trump administration and his allies is going unreported. Thankfully, the new independent press you cite and participate in is making up for part of the information void but a lot more is needed if our democracy is to survive.
Well said and a reminder here that 'free press' does not mean press is free at no cost. We The People can help maintain our democraacy by supporting independent news media such as Tropic Press, by paying something to help them maintain their news service. We The People can make our voices heard in support of free speech by paying something to help these independent news outlets survive. Right now our country is in a roar of devisiveness, perfectly implemented by our president of chaos, who clearly cares less about constituitonal rights. Let's model 'unity' and suggest this to 3 other people ;)
Hopefully next year when Constitution Day rolls around again on September 19, we'll give it due recognition, in appreciation of our constituional rights that survived time.
Also, many of Meidas Touch posts are not behind a paywall. They are not Florida-specific…although their Ed in Chief,a former Republican active in Fl politics for many years, often has the inside scoop. And their reporting on Iran war is far superior to MSM.
“… Two Miami-based Republican commentators posted their takes on Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar’s (R-FL) video denouncing Trump’s immigration policy:
Giancarlo Sopo: “When people in Miami hear ‘illegal immigrant,’ they tend to picture someone who crossed the border illegally while trying to evade immigration authorities. By and large, that’s not who Maria is talking about. Many of the people caught up in immigration enforcement proceedings in Miami entered the US LEGALLY and are getting lumped in with people who entered unlawfully. Immigrant communities understand these distinctions.”
“The media environment for Republicans in heavily Hispanic areas is absolutely brutal right now. Spanish-language television has spent the past year and a half airing story after story about sympathetic families facing detention or deportation. You can argue about the framing, but politically, those images are incredibly powerful.”
Erik Suarez: “100% accurate depiction of Miami right now. Its going to be a brutal wake up for Republicans in the midterms when they realize they lost the Hispanic vote by a landslide.”
“There is a huge difference between Yerickson Guerra who crossed the border illegally and has ties with Tren de Aragua and Renzo Colmenarez, Catholic father of two who entered legally and has been working on his asylum case following the rules waiting for a decision. When both are treated the same way then the discussion and portrayal changes drastically.”
The loss of local news coverage threatens our democracy. People can't be informed voters if they don't know who is "representing" them (or wants to) and what they are or have been doing. It's in our interest, as citizen-journalists, to try to fill the gap, any way we can. Thank you, JC Bruce and all the citizen-journalists for all that you do.
Thanks, JC Bruce. You had it right. when you said Ted Lund does what a whole newspaper does… I think of his coverage of our weather, and free obituaries, besides all the hot news, and more. As a Key West resident, I so appreciate Ted Lund!

What a way to start the day! Coffee, a purring cat, and anguish.
It gets harder and harder to turn that anguish from flight to fight.
However, I will push myself to make a positive dent in the growing ugliness.
😆
Yes,have learned so much from Jason Garcia,a former Orlando Sentinel journalist! His work is never behind a paywall.
