Yeah, it's kind of scary, I agree.

The parents' rights movement is entirely misguided. Children are not property first of all, and not only should their individual health be protected but also that of every child and adult in the nation when parents use their so-called rights to justify endangering everyone around them. Like another commenter noted, I'm glad these families won't be able to travel to other countries at least... and Florida will see the pain as the number of tourists from Europe (and elsewhere) continues to decline.

J.C. Bruce, your introductory email said you would be trying "to fill a bit of the news vacuum left by the decline of local newspapers." I didn't see that in today's newsletter, which was entirely national politics.

That’s fair. However, during the week I had posted on Alligator Alcatraz, DeSantis and his surgeon general’s plan to eliminate childhood vaccinations, Kristi Noem’s visit to SW Florida, and I shared an investigative piece on immigrants with a big Florida angle. My emphasis will be Florida, but sometimes it’s hard to ignore what’s happening in Washington as it, obviously, impacts us here, too.

thanks very much for the reply. I'll keep an eye on Tropic Press to see if you can offer something I'm not getting from my avalanche of other news sources.

What I cannot understand about the lunatic, regressive, anti science, anti medical, pro death republican maga morons is their diminished capacity to understand the simplest of concepts. Vaccines save lives, extend lives, and promote calm. What happens when the nation of backwards, poorly educated nation of FL, occupied by the Floridiots, has an outbreak of one of many childhood diseases? Are hospitals going to be able to treat these children? Will there be enough beds, medical staff and support staff to handle a needless influx of hundreds of sick children? Will those sick children put others in hospital at risk of further harm? Will parents with sick children be able to afford to not work for weeks in order to care for a sick child or children? Will employers let parents of sick children with highly infectious diseases go to work with the chance of spreading disease throughout the workplace? Will daycare centers close when a child shows up with a highly communicable disease? These anti vax freaks are so godawful stupid that they equate putting their children, themselves, and their community at great risk of disease in order to claim sort sort of demented freedom, or in Floridiot's case, freedumb!

I do not care if these Floridiots and their delusional brethren want to put themselves at greater risk of harm and possibly death, but when they also stupidly put their communities and nation at greater risk of both health and financial injury, then they need to be punished for what they do. Maybe dramatically increase costs of healthcare ins to those who refuse vaccination? Anyone who has a child with a highly infectious disease is put on unpaid leave for a month? These morons need to feel some pain for their reckless decisions, or they will take the responsible, and sane with them to a much less livable world. These clowns will not be able to travel many places internationally, so there are still safe places to live outside the nation of Floriduh...

Not sure calm is the goal. Just saying…

Calm as the alternative to chaos. Vaccines were just a matter of fact for the vast majority for the past 50 years until social media bent the brains of the easily manipulated. Perhaps peace of mind might be more appropriate? Of course that is hard to do with the mindless. All I am saying is the side effects of the rapidly spreading, once controlled, diseases, will be as bad as the diseases. What next for Floridiots? Optional child safety seats and lowering the smoking, drinking and marriage age to 12? Freedumb!

Trump’s physical ailments initially made me suspicious of CHF (congestive heart failure). The treatment with IV fluids wouldn’t fit that impression. Do you have any physician friends/consultant who might have some insight into this issue.

I have spoken to a physician about this and another possibility is atrial fibrillation part of the treatment for which is blood thinners which can lead to the "sprucing" on the back of his hands. But that is utterly speculative. The White House, if I recall correctly, has said he's taking blood thinners, which would be consistent with those marks on his hands, I suppose, and venous insufficiency, which the WH says is responsible for his swollen ankles is certainly consistent with what we see. You know, there's every chance they're telling the truth about those two things, but it's difficult to take it at face value, I understand, since he has always been so untransparent about his health and clearly has been less than candid about issues like his weight.
