As expressed by Google's AI, "A socialist is a person who advocates for the social or collective ownership and democratic control of the means of production, rather than private ownership." A communist, on the other hand, adheres to Marxist Communism, "a political, social, and economic ideology that advocates for the elimination of private property and social classes."
While Communism is properly classed as a form of socialism, the difference is that socialism, writ generally, restricts collective ownership to means of production; Communism, on the other hand, extends collective ownership to ... everything! That, of course, violates one of the most basic instincts common to virtually all animals: territoriality. Probably because of that mistake, no Communist state has ever been successful.
Means of production, however, have been collectivized since hunter-gatherer days. The skill set required to produce anything more complex than, say, a stone knife exceeds the capabilities of any individual. A single person can make a wonderful stone knife, but making a weapon system as complex as a high-quality bow and arrow takes (at least) the skills of a fletcher, a woodworker, a flint knapper, and a yarn spinner. The basic separation of human activities into "hunters" and "gatherers" is an acknowledgement that division of labor is the first step in developing scalable production processes.
Since ownership of means of production has always been collectivized, the socialist's step from private ownership (capitalism) to public ownership (socialism) is no big deal from an individual's point of view. The collectivization of ownership of everything under Communism is, however, a very big deal, and taking that step is psychologically traumatic for individuals. Asking a mother bear to give up ownership of her cubs, for example, puts you on very dangerous ground, indeed!
Democratic Socialists, such as Zohran Mamdani, appear (you never can be sure of anything with politicians) to be socialists. Calling them Communists is, on the other hand, a politically motivated lie. If someone lies to you once, can you ever believe anything they say again?
The comment about the average wage really caught my eye and I had to fact check that one. The quote was "The median full-time worker today earns in the range of $60,000 a year. If that person had maintained their same share of the economy since 1975, instead of earning $60,000 a year, they'd earn close to $120,000 a year." From my research it seems that number is slightly overstated... the average wage would be $100k - $110k a year.

All you have to do to belong to the working class is to do work and receive a wage. This is a very big class. On the other hand is the national bourgeoisie. That would be the rich, the super rich, and the oligarchs (in this category are also the class that manages rich people's affairs, workers called the Professional Managerial Class). This class is very small, but I didn't mention that it is also parasitic. Even a small number of coupon-clippers can retard an economy.
Russia's 1917 Bolshevik Revolution was violent, and while effective in getting rid of the parasite class, it is not the only way to go. If we the people can regain control of government and revise the tax policy wisely and thoroughly, the rich would no longer be too rich. Needless to say, the super-fortunes we see today are fully resultant from tax policies that favored this class.
Nobody has pointed out that we already have a functioning system of socialized medicine in this country and it works very well. Unfortunately its not for everyone, only military vets!
