It’s all well and good that FL State Senator Joe Gruter suddenly opposed his Gov., DeSantis, for diverting taxpayer money toward a political cause in 2024 to defeat the abortion and marijuana bills.

I’d like to know how he voted on the many extreme right, anti health care bills, like allowing any citizen to sue a medical professional who helps a woman in medical distress and in need of life/saving procedures due to any pregnancy related emergency.

Put your wife or teen daughter on that ER exam table, Sir, and declare that she should die rather than get care for a miscarriage that became life- threatening.

Hypocrisy doesn’t belong on the medical profession any more than in the political theater.

Really appreciate how the piece frames the 2023 conscience clause in the broader context. Letting providers opt out of care based on personal belifes creates a two-tier system where access depends on geography and luck, not need. I saw this play out with a friend in a small town who had to drive 3 hours for basic reproductive care after a miscarige.

I love how Florida is called "Free," but it isn't free at all. Abortion is a healthcare issue. There are many women who want to birth a baby. Let's review Texas, where a woman had to carry a dead fetus to term because of their backwards laws. The time is long past for women to be 2nd-class citizens. Women hold jobs, can get credit, buy a house, etc.

There are too many backwards legislators in the state legislature, and we need people who have the ability to see all sides of an issue, not those who do what they are told.

It is ridiculous that taxpayer money is used to further interests that may be different than those of the taxpayers.

I hope these bills get traction.

Please say pro-choice instead of pro-abortion. This is fodder for the Right to Lifers.

How about changing the narrative and language to pro-healthcare for women? This is primarily a woman’s issue because it is her body/life that is affected. It’s so much more than just about abortion and reducing it to just that is one of the stumbling blocks to getting any laws passed that would actually solve this manufactured problem.

The foundation of American and Western culture in general includes the mandate in Genesis "to be fruitful and multiply." Any deviation from this core principle invites bitter opposition. From the standpoint of the State, the more 'taxpayers' there are, the better, and the State has an enormous appetite for soldiers. Industry wants workers. Banks want debtors, and so on.

The past century and now this one have seen advances in precarity and insecurity unprecedented in history. From income inequality to threats and practice of war to climate change, these are scary times. In such times, humanity is not keen on reproducing and breeding gets put on hold until conditions warrant having children or decisions are made to not ever have children.

In this materialist view, anti-abortion is not a matter of 'saving the lives of the unborn', but a futile attempt to preserve the status quo.

Good for them but no chance of passage in current legislature. May not even get to the floor for a vote. Remember in November!
